THROUGHOUT the history of all cultures and religions the passages of life and the birth of a baby have traditionally been followed by a naming or blessing ceremony or ritual. Naming a child is a very ancient and powerful ritual which honours the meaning of the chosen names together with the reason that they were given.
In the Western world infant baptism or christening has been the traditional Christian form of naming and the acceptance into a church or religious group. Naming rituals or ceremonies of a baby have traditionally been the major celebration of welcoming into the family.
However, today with the gradual move away from the traditional church, many couples are choosing a naming ceremony as this means their child can make their own decision on religious or spiritual beliefs when they have reached the age of discernment. It offers the opportunity for greater family involvement in the ceremony while acknowledging cultural and alternative spiritual beliefs.
Although not a legally required ceremony, heartfelt commitments are made during the ceremony by the parents, grandparents, and mentors. Certificates are also given by the celebrant to honour the occasion. Gifts can be given and, often, a tree such as a Kauri or Kowhai, is planted to mark the event.
Music and readings can contribute to the richness and vibrancy of the ceremony, together with a variety of rituals using water, candles and affirmations written on cards to be given to the baby when he or she gets older.
I am able to provide a traditional religious christening or a secular naming or blessing ceremony to suit your needs. I provide a resource workbook and have a large range of other resource material together with professional expertise.
